LaVahn Hoh, a nationally known circus historian, author, and expert, will give a presentation about the history of the circus. He spent his career archiving and teaching about the circus and we are thrilled to offer this presentation for free to our community. He will regale us with his personal stories of the circus and share a audiovisual presentation as he did when he taught the only college-accredited course in America on the history of circus.

MORE ABOUT LAVAHN HOH
LaVahn and his course have been featured in USA Today and People Magazine. Mr. Hoh also co-authored a book entitled, Step Right Up! The Adventure of Circus in America. He wrote The History of Clowning for Microsoft’s 1998 version of Encarta and the History of the Circus for the 2001 edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. In 2007, he completed the history of the American circus train for the University of Indiana Press. From 1989-1997, Mr. Hoh served as archivist and historian for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, a position created for him. He has appeared in several Arts and Entertainment Network presentations including 200 Years of Circus In America; Dare Devils; The Flying Wallendas; The History of the Ringling Brothers; and Biography Channel’s Ringling Brothers.

QUILTS OF VALOR
A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”

USAF AIR FORCE BAND
The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band has a rich history of inspiring hearts and minds, building and sustaining American patriotism, and enhancing esprit de corps in the United States Air Force. It was one of the original Army Air Corps bands, created by order of the Secretary of War on October 1, 1941 and assigned to Barksdale Field, Louisiana. In June 1946, after a short stay at Brooks Field, Texas, the band arrived at Langley Field, now Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA; its current home.
The USAF Heritage of America Band’s exceptional musicianship has earned international critical acclaim and numerous honors: eight Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, five Air Force Organizational Excellence Awards, four Colonel George S. Howard Citations of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Band, North Carolina’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and countless state and municipal proclamations. The USAF Heritage of America Band remains at the forefront of preserving and enriching America’s musical heritage in the 21st century.

ABOUT THE SHOW
This show will feature the work of Jennifer Carpenter, a colored pencil artist from Virginia.

About the Artist:
Every raindrop holds a tiny little secret wanting to be heard. Anything that shimmers begs for attention. Glass is never just the color by which we call it. Reflections of any kind permit the viewer to look two places at once. These observations and many more are the basis for every drawing I create in colored pencil, each with a story waiting to be told.
